6 age groups will participate, from 2-year-olds through 8th grade.

OAKLAND, CA —A non-profit group is hosting a running series in Oakland this fall to introduce children to the benefits of running, the group's officials announced Sunday.

The series spans five consecutive weeks starting Sept. 10 at Joaquin Miller Elementary School at 5525 Ascot Drive in Oakland, according to officials with the Healthy Kids Running Series. Each week races start at 4:30 p.m.

The program is designed to help kids maintain a healthy weight as well as give children a chance to do something positive, educational and fun.

Across the country last year, more than 20,000 children participated. Each child who completes the series will receive a medal, and trophies will go to the top girl and boy in each age group, according to organizers.
