LA JOLLA, CA — A San Diego police officer fatally shot a man Saturday after he approached officers with a knife during a disturbance in La Jolla, authorities said.

The disturbance was reported around 7 a.m. Saturday in the 5400 block of La Jolla Boulevard, when police received multiple calls regarding a man with a knife, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

"Officers arrived on the scene and observed an Hispanic man in his 20s next to a vehicle stopped in the road. As officers approached, the subject walked toward them with a knife. The officers drew their service weapons and gave the subject verbal commands to drop the weapon. One officer fired his weapon, striking the man," the department reported.

Officers provided medical aid and the man was taken to a hospital, where he later died, authorities said.

No officers were injured in the incident.

The motive for the disturbance was unclear and a suspect description was not immediately available.
