Bay Area Storms Dump An Inch Of Rain, And More Is In The Forecast

The Bay Area will get some well-deserved sunshine to kick off the week before the next round of wet weather pours into NorCal.

The next storms are already brewing, which forecasters expect will bring wet and windy weather back to the Bay Area starting around midweek.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Spring storms dumped more than an inch of rain over parts of the Bay Area over the weekend, and more wet weather is ahead for NorCal after a brief break in the action, according to the latest forecasts.

The National Weather Service said rain totals ranged from a half-inch to an inch across the region Saturday, with the highest figures in North Bay. Forecasters posted footage on social media showing a waterspout that formed over Monterey Bay.

In the mountains, researchers at UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab said weekend storms dumped more than 20 inches of fresh snow at the Donner Pass facility, and more storms brewing could mean another foot or two in the coming days.

In the Bay Area, the weather service said Monday and Tuesday should allow for sunshine and a little more warmth ahead of a cold front and more rain looming around mid-week.

"Rain showers are initially expected along and ahead of a cold front on Wednesday, with a continuation into Thursday in an unstable post-frontal regime," NWS Bay Area wrote Monday. "Deterministic models...are in good agreement in a stronger low-pressure system moving through the region on Friday into the weekend."

Forecasters said early projections showed 1 to 2 inches of rain for the coastal mountains, with between a quarter and three-quarters of an inch elsewhere in the Bay Area.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, a weekend atmospheric river could prove wetter and windier than the midweek storm, tapping from a plume of moisture that could once again see more than an inch of rain for parts of the Bay Area and wind gusts up to 40 mph along the coast.

The weather service said more details on the timing and impacts of both systems would be shared as the forecast comes into focus in the coming days.
