Celebrate National Pizza Day At These Local San Francisco Restaurants

When it comes to pizza in San Francisco, there is no shortage of options available to diners. San Francisco has experienced a boom when it comes to Detroit-style concepts and most Italian restaurants have some version of pizza available to diners, but I am a fan of the old-school and classic places.

Despite all the changes to the city, classic restaurants and neighborhoods are an important part of San Francisco's history and also involved in the evolution of the city's dining scene. The pandemic has brought numerous challenges to local businesses and neighborhoods, and they need your support now more than ever.

Here are a few of my favorite pizza spots in San Francisco in celebration of National Pizza Day, which is Thursday, Feb. 9.

Il Casaro Pizzeria & Mozzarella Bar: Il Casaro is located in the heart of San Francisco's "Little Italy" and features a mean wood burning pizza oven. The restaurant says they, like Italians, believe "pizza should always be affordable and accessible for everybody and anybody." They specialize in Neapolitan pizza and my personal favorite on the menu is their Diavola pie with tomato sauce, mozzarella, spicy salami, calabrian chili, and spicy oil. Golden Boy Pizza: This pizza dive enjoys a cult-like following and certainly has a grungy 90s or 80s feel to it. It's one of the first places that comes to mind for late-night munchies and the lines can get long on weekends and at night. The signature focaccia crust keeps diners coming over and over. Golden Boy is best known for their garlic clam pizza, but I prefer to keep it simple with a pepperoni and cheese. 542 Green St, San Francisco, CA 94133.

Yellow Moto Pizzeria: Flour + Water Pizzeria, a popular Mission District neighborhood restaurant, shuttered in 2019 and Yellow Moto Pizzeria was born its ashes. Yellow Moto is run by David White, who was one of the original partners behind Flour + Water. This concept is more creative, but still focuses on a love for pizza, and that's all you really need. Capo's by Tony Gemignani: There is nothing quite like a classic Italian restaurant. Capo's by Tony Gemignani is reminiscent of an era long past in San Francisco, when Italians were running the city and when speakeasy locations were not just a fun gimmick as they are today. Gemignani is the first American to win World Champion Pizza Maker at the World Pizza Cup in Naples, Italy. Despite the many changes the SF Bay Area has undergone, North Beach and Capo's remain a great destination for those who love classic Italian cuisine.
