OAKLAND, CA — Oakland is the worst city to drive in across the U.S., due in part to its dangerous crashes, high gas prices and long commute times, according to a new ranking by Forbes, in which San Francisco was named third worst.

To determine which cities are the worst to drive in, Forbes Advisor compared the 47 most populated U.S. cities with available data across 15 metrics spanning four key categories: driving experience, safety, cost of car ownership and access to car maintenance.

Metrics included hours lost in traffic congestion, commute time, average speed in rush hour traffic, fatal car accidents and more.

Out of the top 10 worst cities, Oakland was No. 1, according to the ranking. Oakland received a "perfect" score of 100, while San Francisco scored 96.57 at No. 3. Miami ranked No. 2.

Forbes Advisor determined a city's overall score by assigning each metric a certain number of points. The higher the score, the worse driving in a specific city is.

Boston ranked worst for driving experience, while Albuquerque was the worst city for driver safety. New York City was the most expensive city to own a car, and drivers in Memphis had the worst access to car maintenance.

  3. San Francisco: 96.57
  4. Houston: 96.52
  5. Philadelphia: 96.33
  6. New York City: 92.64
  7. Chicago: 84.92
  8. Atlanta: 84.87
  9. Dallas: 84
  10. Portland: 80.83
