SFSU Resident Dining Fights Campus Food Insecurity

SFSU Dining, collaborating with Student Health Services under the Basic Needs umbrella, is committed to alleviating campus food insecurity

San Francisco State University Dining, in collaboration with Student Health Services under the Basic Needs umbrella, is committed to alleviating campus food insecurity through the Sodexo STOP Hunger Initiative. Over the past eight years, the partnership has seen the donation of more than 35,000 meal swipes to individuals facing food insecurity.

As part of this impactful initiative, SFSU Resident Dining continues to spearhead the Emergency Meal Card Program. This program, established to address the immediate needs of students experiencing food insecurity, has proven to be a lifeline for those facing unforeseen challenges.

The program consistently donates 2,200 meal swipes each semester to the cause. These meal swipes form the foundation of the Emergency Meal Card Program, enabling SFSU to provide essential nutrition to students in need.

The program operates under the principle that meal cards are reserved for students facing emergency situations without access to food. It is not intended to supplement existing meal plans or assist students seeking ways to reduce food expenses. The primary goal is to offer immediate support during critical moments.

Each participating student is eligible to receive one meal card per semester. However, recognizing that emergencies can persist, students needing additional support are encouraged to connect with an FSS Staff member via the Request Form. These discussions aim to explore longer-term solutions for sustained food security, which may or may not involve a second meal card.

The Meal cards, each loaded with 10 meals, are redeemable exclusively at City Eats on the SFSU campus. This strategic partnership not only addresses the pressing issue of campus hunger but also fosters a sense of community by ensuring that those in need have access to nutritious meals within the university environment.
