San Francisco, California — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Patty Stanton who nominated Sofie of San Francisco, California.

How do you know the star local student?

From volunteering at Muttville Senior Dog Rescue

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

Sofie is a devoted and compassionate youth volunteer, dedicated to helping rescued senior dogs feel comfortable and safe after arriving at Muttville. Together with her mother, they sought out a cause that resonated with their values. Sofie came to understand the heartbreaking situation of animal welfare, where dogs are at risk of being put down if they're not adopted. Sofie said, "On our first visit to Muttville we immediately fell in love with the whole place. All the volunteers and staff made us feel so welcome, and I felt like I belonged. Before my experience at Muttville, seeing older dogs being shunned because of their age or complications broke my heart. I knew I couldn't just stand there and let it happen, so I made sure to devote as much of my free time to them and Muttville as possible." Since volunteering, Sofie took the next step and brought home senior dogs to foster. She said, "Seeing dogs go from scared, hurt little creatures, to living their best moments brings so much joy to our whole family! These dogs showed me that when you are at your lowest, the only way you can go is up, and it's inspiring to see them keep pushing. Lastly, one thing I want people to know about me is that I have completed over 100 hours of service at Muttville and I feel so lucky to have been able to help our furry, four-legged friends."

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

When young people take the time to become educated about vulnerable animals, their influence has the potential to extend far and wide, and can potentially create a significant impact in both their world and beyond!

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Sofie!
