Supernatural energies at Candle Light Shop

Mission District institution forges ahead after 55 years

San Francisco—Today I visited Candle Light Shop at 3330 24th street (half a block west of Mission street). I was greeted by a sign instructing me to knock if the door was locked and spotted a gentle caring soul inside walking towards the door. Her name is Maria and she has been the owner for a few years now, however the original owner is still very involved and they work together seamlessly. As for how business is going she stated in Spanish, "ahí vamos" meaning, "we're going," she also mentioned "the economy is not good but customers are still coming, but not like before the pandemic." The place opened in 1969 with the previous owner, and Maria has worked here 22 years. The best sellers are candles, statuettes, incense, and crystals; there are also rosaries, bracelets, and ritual bath cleansing concoctions. This place has definite pagan vibes from the magical-spiritual energies found within, but is not considered as such in and of itself. Current operating hours are from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM Monday through Friday, and as Maria sees it people need to focus on the positive. This is particularly true when "lighting candles, and focusing on turning the energy into light." Therefore staying positive to ensure their intentions have the right outcome. She also mentioned a return to God and religion in general were great for anyone's well being. She also said "everyone is welcome here" and gave a long diverse list of groups of all walks of life that have come through the doors. This includes folks that pray outside when the place is closed, to regulars coming from as far as Sacramento, and international tourists too. Although her awning needs a bit of repairing from the storms, Candle Light Shop is a great place to visit and is going strong. It is a good business to make purchases related to the sacraments too, such as baptisms and first communions. I also noticed protection amulets and Buddhas for sale in addition to a plethora of candles, prayer cards, all seeing eye bracelets, and everything Christian iconography has to offer. A passerby that was concerned that I was photographing the entrance told me it was a "very sacred space." This sentiment was confirmed by the proprietress which said many patrons say that her shop has, "very special energy". One has to see this place on the inside and it is quite a spiritual sight, however one will have to imagine it since pictures of the inside are not allowed. This business does not currently have a website, however they may be reached at 415-824-4003. The full address is 3330 24th st, San Francisco CA 94110. This location is within a 2 minute walk from the 24st st Mission BART subway station and from Muni bus lines: 14, 27, 48, and 67.
