Rising to meet the challenge of a humanitarian crisis, LA County Board of Supervisors Chair Hilda L. Solis asked our County departments to meet the moment and care for thousands of unaccompanied children. Met the challenge they did -- more than 500 LA County employees stepped up to provide welcoming care to children arriving in the United States after a harrowing and often traumatic journey. These children, whose journey led to the Pomona Fairplex, received medical care, mental health services and vaccinations against childhood diseases and COVID-19, all provided by workers from the departments of Children and Family Services, Health Services, Mental Health and Public Health. Since May 2021, more than 2,100 children have been temporarily housed and cared for at the Fairplex. So far, over 1,300 have been reunited with their families and sponsors. Their lives have been changed forever—and so have the lives of the LA County employees who worked with them.
