Alten Construction wraps up construction at Dominican University of California

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Alten Construction, a full-service San Francisco Bay Area commercial construction company, recently wrapped up construction on the Center for the Dominican Experience, located within the Archbishop Alemany Library at Dominican University of California.

The $6.4 million project consisted of a demolition of the interior space within the library and construction of a new interior office layout, including all finishes, lighting, partition walls, and electrical and data distribution, new accessible restrooms, a two-story elevator and staircase, structural strengthening and modifications, complete replacement of the HVAC system and modifications to existing plumbing systems.

Alten Construction was the contractor for the project and worked with Pound Management Inc. and Hibser Yamauchi Architects.

The new academic and social center will house the university’s nationally recognized model for holistic student learning, support and interconnected practices, including intensive mentorship, community engagement, capstone work and digital portfolio development.

“The Center for the Dominican Experience was developed with the student experience at the heart of all plans,” said Dr. Nicola Pitchford, president of Dominican University of California. “This important new building will serve as a dynamic academic and social hub that will enhance connections between students, faculty, staff and community partners. Our 133-year-old university now has a modern new showcase that will serve our community in many ways – for study, collaboration, support, celebration and quiet contemplation. Located at the heart of our campus, it’s a welcoming space that embraces its beautiful surroundings. Glass walls, open spaces, and expansive windows truly bring the outdoors in. We thank our amazing team of designers and contractors, particularly Alten Construction, for partnering with us and bringing our vision to life.”

The project launched in 2022. A ceremonial ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Friday, April 12 in the new space.
