Vintners Resort to Host a 'Feast from the Sea’ Wine Paired Dinner with Chef John Ash & John Finger

History and nature lovers can learn about an orchard originally planted in 1908-1912, later abandoned and recently restored at Jack London State Historic Park. Then they will hike to the newly reclaimed orchard to experience the rejuvenation that now provides fresh produce for those facing food insecurity.
Deputy Director of Operations Eric Metz will start the day with a presentation on the history and progress of the orchard.
The group will then have the option to take a medium-effort, six-mile (round trip) hike to the orchard for a for a personalized tour of the various areas that have been given a new lease on life and learn more about the unique challenges they had to overcome to revitalize the different areas, such as no access to water. Many of the fruit trees in the orchard now are much older than their average lifespans.
According to records from 1910, there were “675 apple trees, 175 apricots, 115 cherries, 250 pears, 75 plums, 810 prunes, and 575 peaches, and of grapevines 1,147 vines” in the orchard that was part of Sonoma Developmental Center. By the 1980s, the orchard had been abandoned.
In 2002 Jack London State Historic Park acquired approximately 600 acres of this land, including 110 acres of orchard. In 2017, Jack London Park Partners acquired permits to start the work to revive these struggling trees with the work performed by mainly volunteers.
Participants in the August 17 program will learn about the varieties that remain and a special project to reintroduce the heritage peach with the assistance of 18 volunteers, including 13 from the Sonoma Valley Rotary Club.
Today, the revitalized trees are producing a bounty of fruit. Jack London State Historic Park has now partnered with <a href="https://www.farmtopantry.org/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Farm to Pantry</a> to glean the fruit from the orchard and deliver it to Sonoma organizations that help people facing food insecurity. In 2023, 7,129 pounds of fruit was donated to Farm to Pantry.
Those planning the hike should bring plenty of water, hiking poles, a snack, dress in layers, and wear sturdy shoes.
When: Saturday, August 17, 2024, 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Price: $15.00 per person plus the park entry fee of $10 per vehicle (up to nine passengers).

Are you ready to have fun and get messy? To give yourself permission to play, experiment, and free up your creativity? To learn an art technique that can be used in many different ways?
The art of making paste paper began in the 17th century when it was first used to create playing cards, wallpaper and then bookbindings. Today, artists enjoy using paste paper in many ways, from collage to furniture. This technique of surface decoration involves spreading a layer of colored paste onto paper then creating patterns using various tools. Additional layers of colors and textures can be applied.
We’ll spend the morning making lots of paste paper and take a break to let it dry. After lunch you’ll turn some of your beautiful paste paper into a flag book – a type of sculptural artist book that you might choose to later embellish with writing, collage, threads, etc.
You’ll go home with your flag book plus several sheets of paste paper which will stand alone as art pieces or can be used for collage, gift wrap, greeting cards, bookmaking or decorating.
Note: Please bring a bag lunch.

The Center’s Figure Arts Open Studio usually takes place from 10:00am-12:30pm on the first and third Saturday of the month. Join us for uninstructed live sessions of figure drawing with fellow artists. All levels of experience are welcome. Models vary. Chairs, tables, and easels are provided, but please bring your own supplies. Using paints is acceptable, but if you intend to use oils you may only use an odorless solvent such as Gamsol. Ages 18+.
Advance registration is highly recommended as space is limited to 15 artists.

The Zucchini Car Races – August 20, 2024 Location: Tuesday Night Farmers Market on the Sonoma Plaza On site registration is 5:00 – 5:45 PM Races start 6:00 PM
All entries need to be 10” wide or smaller or they will not fit on the track.
Prizes are given for the fastest zucchini and ‘best in show.’ The registration form has 3 categories: Small (10” long and under) Med (11”-15” long) Large (16” and longer)
Workshop Supplies available: Different wheels like recycled chair wheels, skateboard, CDs, toy cars on hand but PLEASE bring your wheels if you have specific ones you want to use. Recycled materials and art supplies such as bottle caps, barbies and Dolls, cloth, buttons, feathers, googly eyes and other treasures! Supplies you can bring: BYOZ! – Bring your own Zucchini that is no wider than 10’ wide (See rules for entry below) Any personal decor, stuffed animals,wheels, cars or flair you would like to work with or share!
