TEMECULA, CA — Motorists who drive the bumpy, winding stretch of Rainbow Canyon Road in Temecula's southern reaches know the street is a little precarious. It's even worse for the area's cyclists who use the road for weekend rides to San Diego County.

Now the city is set to spend about $2 million to rehabilitate the route.

On Tuesday, the Temecula City Council is poised to approve plans and specifications, and authorize city officials to solicit construction bids for the "Rainbow Canyon Pavement Rehabilitation Project." The work will extend from the intersection of Rainbow Canyon Road and Pechanga Parkway to Temecula's southern city limits.

Work will include removing the asphalt, leveling the road, and laying down new asphalt and sealant. Roadway restriping and installation of new ADA-compliant curb ramps will also be included in the work, according to city documents.

Once the city reviews bids and selects a contractor, the rehab is estimated to take about 60 working days, the documents show.

The Rainbow Canyon Pavement Rehabilitation Project is identified in the city’s Capital Improvement Program budget for fiscal years 2024-2028. According to the city documents, Measure S and Pechanga Intergovernmental Agreement reimbursement funds will pay for the project.

Tuesday's 6 p.m. Temecula City Council meeting takes place in Council Chambers at City Hall, 41000 Main Street. See the full meeting agenda here.
