RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA — A 4-year-old child from eastern Riverside County died from an illness possibly linked to the respiratory syncytial virus, also known as RSV, Riverside County Public Health Officer Dr. Geoffrey Leung reported.

"The loss of a child is devastating, and all of Public Health sends its heartfelt condolences to the family, loved ones and anyone impacted by this tragic event," Leung said in a recent news release.

The child's identity and city of residence will not be released, RUHS health officials said.

Meanwhile, as Riverside County Public Health officials have observed an increase in influenza and RSV in young children, there are various precautions that can help prevent the spread of RSV as well as other viruses.

  • Practice washing hands with their children.
  • Show children how to properly "cough or sneeze into your elbow."
  • Keep sick children home from school or daycare whenever possible.
  • Practice indoor masking when someone is sick inside the home.
  • Disinfect all surfaces in the home and high-touch areas on a regular basis.

Parents who are concerned about their child's risk of a severe RSV infection can speak to a healthcare provider about receiving a medicine called palivizumab, which is typically given to premature infants and young children with heart and lung conditions, according to the RUHS website.

In 2022, RSV season started earlier than expected. Doctors expect the virus to stick around through March, according to RUHS health officials.

What is RSV?

RSV is a virus that causes mild, cold-like symptoms. It can be serious for infants and older adults in the winter.

How is RSV Spread?

RSV is spread through coughs, sneezes and direct contact with an infected surface or with someone who has RSV, RUHS health officials said.

How long is RSV Contagious?

Contagiousness related to RSV can last for up to eight days and could begin two days before symptoms start.

What are RSV Symptoms?

Symptoms include shallow or difficulty breathing, coughing, poor appetite, and listlessness or irritability. Additionally, it can cause bronchiolitis and pneumonia.
