TEMECULA, CA — A law enforcement sting in Temecula targeting restaurants that sell alcoholic drinks to minors netted two citations earlier this month, authorities announced.

On June 1, agents from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control and deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office conducted the operation.

Using minors who work under the direct supervision of deputies and agents, the underage juveniles attempted to purchase alcohol from restaurants inside city limits, according to the sheriff's department.

In two cases, bartenders served the minors. The names of the restaurants and bartenders were not released.

The fine for selling alcohol to minors is a minimum of $250 and/or 24 to 32 hours of community service for a first violation. According to the sheriff's department, the ABC will also take administrative action against the alcoholic beverage licenses of the involved businesses. That can include a fine, a suspension, or the permanent revocation of the license.

"We conduct these operations as an effort to keep alcohol out of the hands of our youth," said ABC Director Eric Hirata. "This collaborative effort among California law enforcement agencies spotlights underage drinking prevention, increases public safety for communities, and helps reduce DUIs."

Funding for the operation was provided by a grant from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control through the department’s Alcohol Policing Partnership program. The grant program runs through June 30, 2024.
