Obituary: John "Jack" R. Finn, 95, of Durham

John, a proud U.S. Navy veteran and devoted family man, most recently worked for the Connecticut Bank and Trust Company.

DURHAM, CT - (From Wallingford Funeral Home) John R. Finn (Jack), 95, of Durham, loving husband of Anna (Rainone) Finn, passed away May 20, 2021 at Middlesex Hospital.

He was born in Brooklyn, New York on May 25, 1925, a son of the late Edward and Madelin (Keating) Finn. He attended St. Catherine of Genoa and St. John’s Preparatory Catholic Schools.
John enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 serving in the European and Japanese theaters during World War II aboard the Baltimore Class Armored Cruiser USS Quincy CA-71.

The Quincy was one of the most traveled and engaged ships in the European and Japanese Theaters and was the site diplomatic relations hosting both President Roosevelt, Future President General Eisenhower as well as many foreign leaders.

Among many notable engagements, The Quincy was the first ship to open fire at the Invasion of Normandy. Four bronze battle stars were awarded to John during service, Normandy Invasion, Invasion of Southern France, Invasion of Okinawa and repeated attacks on Mainland Japan.

Having spent childhood and young adult summers on the CT shore, John and family decided to move to CT in 1967 residing in Durham. John retired from Connecticut Bank and Trust Company in 1990.

He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and enjoyed reading, history, music and gardening. John had over 100 editorials, articles and stories published in various newspapers and magazines.

In addition to his wife, Anna, he is survived by his son, John R. Finn Jr; his daughter, Anne Finn; his grandchildren, Logan, Jack and George; and many nieces, nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by his sister and two brothers.

His family will receive relatives and friends at The Wallingford Funeral Home on Sunday, May 30, 2021 from 3 pm until 5pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Tuesday, June 1, 2021 directly at St. Sebastian Church, 155 Washington Street, Middletown. Interment with military honors will be in State Veteran’s Cemetery in Middletown.
