Obituary: Maura M. Cullen, 87, of Durham

Maura, always loving and devoted to her family, was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and loved reading, doing puzzles and playing bingo.

WALLINGFORD, CT - (From Wallingford Funeral Home) Maura M. Cullen, 87, of Durham, wife of 59 years to the late John J. Cullen, passed away November 18, 2021 at Hartford Hospital.

She was born in Dublin, Ireland on January 10, 1934, a daughter of the late Michael and Margaret (Kinsella) Heffernan.

Maura moved with her husband and two daughters to the United States in 1974 and settled in Connecticut.

She was employed by The Guest Company of Meriden until her retirement at the age of 68, when she moved to Haines City, FL where she spent 14 wonderful years with her loving husband.

Maura returned to Connecticut with her husband in 2016 to be with her family and lived the remainder of her life in Meriden and Durham. Maura was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, she loved to read, do puzzles and play bingo.

She is survived by two loving daughters, Gerri Smyth and her husband, Philip of Davenport, FL and Sandi Caruth and her husband, Bob, of Durham; her brother, Brendan Heffernan of Meriden; five grandchildren, Derrik Smyth, Ashley Chiari, Kourtney Lasso, Taylor Smyth, and Ryan Lasso; her great-granddaughter, Emma Chiari; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Michael and Eddie Heffernan, her sisters, Vera Krause, Collette Sheridan and Theresa Kane.

Her family will receive relatives and friends in The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wednesday, November 24, 2021 from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.

A funeral service will begin at 6 p.m.
