Election 2016: Greenwich Student Voter Registration Session

Greenwich's Registrars of Voters will hold a voter registration session for Greenwich High students.

GREENWICH, CT - The Greenwich Registrars of Voters will partner with the League of Women Voters, for a Voter Registration Session at Greenwich High School on Thursday, March 24.

Students can register in the Student Center between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. It is recommended that students have a photo ID, however, it is not required.

“Greenwich and the State of Connecticut need citizens who are active and informed. The act of registering to vote is a signal that you care about your community,” Republican Registrar Fred DeCaro III said in a statement.

According to the “Rock The Vote,” between 48 and 52% of registered 18-to-29-year-olds voted in 2012. The percentages are on the rise, and reportedly are moving towards the 55 percent participation record set in 1972, the Presidential Election held after the voting age was reduced from 21 to 18.

Democratic Registrar of Voters Sharon Vecchiolla, who's been participating in high school voter registration drives for more than 20 years, said, "Students find it difficult to register while away at college, the military, or while working. Young people are more likely to vote if they register before they leave high school. We hope many students take advantage of this chance to be registered and ready for the next election."

There also will be electronic devices available to allow students with driver’s licenses to register to vote online.

The registrars may register students who are under 18 as long as they will be 18 by the Nov. 8 election.
