GREENWICH, CT — Greenwich Public Schools recently provided an update and a look ahead on the Greenwich High School soil remediation work that's been ongoing for a number of years.

According to the update for August, the baseball field, weather permitting, is expected to be available for use in spring 2025.

Restoration of the contractor staging area in the outfield of the softball field is planned to be completed during the fall.

Aditionally, the restoration of a small area in the parking lot near the pool began in July and August and will continue into the fall.

Work on the baseball and softball fields began in June 2023. Overall, crews excavated and disposed of approximately 15,800 tons of contaminated soil beneath and adjacent to the fields. Havemeyer Field, which is behind Town Hall and near the Board of Education building, was reconfigured to accommodate GHS baseball.

Remediation of the baseball field was completed in November 2023, and restoration to the site began last month.

The other fields in the complex were remediated and reopened for use in recent years.

"Over the past four years, the town has conducted remediation at the high school in conjunction with the construction of new athletic fields. This work has been phased to perform most of the cleanup work over the summer recess with limited remediation and some construction of fields occurring during the school year," the schoo district said in the update. "The cleanup schedule has been sequenced to minimize the loss of use of school facilities and athletic fields during the project. However, access to the fields will continue to be limited at times."

Remaining remediation along the back of the school building including areas adjacent to the Performing Arts Center is planned for summer 2025, the district said.
