Tropical Storm Joaquin May Impact Ledyard; Hazardous Weather Outlook Issued

Connecticut is looking at soaking rains this week, some flooding concerns and a possible visit by Joaquin.

After about six weeks with little rain and abnormally dry to moderate drought conditions in Connecticut, the forecast is calling for rain — and lots of it.

The National Weather Service issued a “Hazardous Weather Outlook” for heavy rains beginning Tuesday evening and likely continuing into early Thursday, before a new batch of heavy rain is expected Friday, lasting through the weekend.

Southern Connecticut can expect up to 2 inches of rain from Tuesday through Thursday’s storms, while northern Connecticut could receive up to 4 inches of rainfall in some locations.

Besides the heavy rains, there also are flooding concerns for the entire state, especially in Hartford and Tolland counties, where a “Flood Watch” is in effect.

For Middlesex, New London, Fairfield and New Haven counties, we can expect localized heavy rainfall Tuesday night that may produce minor flooding.

Tropical Storm Joaquin: What Connecticut Meteorologists Are Saying

  • Meteorologist Gil Simmons: From a boring pattern to OH MY crazy weather ahead! Full update including thoughts on recently strengthened Tropical Storm Joaquin. A terrible Wednesday commute prior to that with blinding rain.
  • Meteorologist Ryan Hanrahan: The morning update from the Hurricane Center shows Joaquin in a threatening position by this weekend. That said, take a look at the second image here which shows the odds of getting tropical storm conditions in Connecticut only around 10 percent. Uncertainty remains high and the odds of a direct impact from a tropical storm remain low (though not zero).
