Orange Man, 2 Others Charged With Racing On I-95: State Police

The drivers are accused of racing and weaving in & out of traffic. One of the drivers crashed after not stopping for police, officials said.

WEST HAVEN, CT — Three men were arrested after police said they were racing on I-95 in West Haven on Sunday morning. Another man was charged after he went to bail his friend out and provided false information, police said.

State police received multiple 911 calls around 10:15 a.m. on July 17 reporting approximately six vehicles that were racing, weaving in and out of traffic, and using the shoulder to pass in the area of I-91 South to I-95 South, according to police.

State troopers set up in the area of Exit 43 on I-95 South and saw the vehicles operating erratically, police said.

As troopers tried to pull the vehicles over, one pulled over to the shoulder as the others took off, according to police.

Police said the driver of the first vehicle that stopped was identified as Mazamil Qahir, 18, of Trumbull.

Another driver crashed after trying to weave between vehicles, according to police. He was identified Jordan Couto, 28, of Orange.

The driver of a third vehicle circled back to check on Couto and was recognized as one of the racers, police said. He was identified as Joshua Colon, 24, of Stratford.

Couto, Colon, and Qahir were all taken into custody and arrested.

Couto and Colon were both charged with reckless driving, racing and first-degree reckless endangerment.

Qahir was charged with reckless driving, racing and two counts of first-degree reckless endangerment.

Couto, Colon and Qahir were all released after posting a $2,500 bond with court dates of Aug. 2.

Zwar Chaudry went to Troop G in Bridgeport to bail his friend out and provided troopers with a false date of birth and denied having valid identification, according to police.

Police said Chaudry was later found to have operated his vehicle under suspension.

Chaudry, 28, of Hamden, was charged with interfering/resisting and operating a vehicle under suspension. He was released after posting a $2,500 bond with a court date of Aug. 2.
