Snow and Sleet May Impact Orange's Evening Commute

It’s here, the long-duration significant storm will arrive in time for the evening commute and may be with us until Thursday afternoon.

For most of the state except New London County we may seen some snow later this afternoon especially for the evening commute home from work.

The National Weather Service has issued a “Winter Weather Advisory” for northern Fairfield, northern New Haven, Hartford and Tolland counties. No advisories have been posted for the immediate Connecticut coastline and Middlesex County.

A coating and up to an inch is possible on the Shoreline too but the temperature will be too warm for any serious accumulation here, the weather service predicts.

Here is the latest on how much snow, ice, and rain you can expect from now until Thursday afternoon.

Northern New Haven and Northern Fairfield counties, which includes Naugatuck, Southbury, and Oxford:

The advisory spans 1 p.m. today to 9 a.m. Wednesday for snow, sleet, and freezing rain. Accumulations include up to 1 inch of snow and a tenth of an inch of ice. Light snow begins this afternoon, mixes with ice and is plain rain early Wednesday.

On Wednesday, a half inch of plain rain is expected and up to another inch on Wednesday night. Another quarter of an inch if possible before the rain ends early Thursday afternoon.

Connecticut coastline, including Milford, Orange, East Haven, Branford, Guilford, and Madison:

Snow is possible after 1 p.m. and a half inch of snow is possible, except in New London County where all rain is forecast.

The mix for the coastline will turn to plain rain by 9 p.m. Before the changeover, another half inch of snow is possible, again except for New London County.

On Wednesday, a half inch of rain is expected during the day, another inch Wednesday night and the rain ends around noon Thursday. The temps on Wednesday and Thursday may be in the 50s. Thunderstorms are possible too Wednesday night in New London County.

Hartford County:

The Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 2 p.m. today to noon Wednesday. Snow will accumulate 1 to 3 inches along with up to a few hundredths of an inch of ice. Snow will begin to fall between 2 and 4 p.m. and mix with sleet this evening before changing to freezing rain after midnight. It won’t turn to plain rain here until sometime Wednesday morning likely after the morning commute on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, the rain could accumulate up to a half inch during the day but it picks up in intensity in the evening and an inch of rain is likely before it tapers off on Thursday.

Tolland County:

Snow will accumulate 1 to 2 inches along with a trace of ice. Snow begins here between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. and will mix with sleet before midnight and then to freezing rain.

The change to plain rain will occur Wednesday morning.

On Wednesday, up to a half inch of rain is likely but the rain is heavy Wednesday night and could accumulate between 1-2 inches before ending around noon Thursday.

Middlesex County:

A chance of rain between 1 and 4 p.m. today then a bit of snow is expected but almost no accumulation is expected.

Some sleet and rain this evening and by midnight it’s plain rain and a half inch is expected. On Wednesday evening, heavy rain is expected an an inch of rain is likely. The rain ends Thursday afternoon and another half inch is possible.
