First Church of Christ In Wethersfield

Join WHS volunteer research librarian and long-time Wethersfield resident Martha Smart for a fascinating hour and a half walk through Wethersfield's Ancient Burying Ground. Learn Wethersfield's history through the lives of the people who lived here.
This is one of two opportunities&nbsp; left to take this tour this season. Tours gather at the red barn in the First Church parking lot. In the event of rain, the tour will be given on Saturday, September 21. Tours last about an hour and a half. Admission is $10 for the general public and free to current WHS members. Due to the outdoor nature of the tour, only cash will be accepted.

Turn Back Time -- Dance the Night Away th the Music Of Dually Noted

The Wethersfield Academy for the Arts and The Noah Webster House &amp; West Hartford Historical Society are partnering to offer tours of one of the oldest private residences in Connecticut: the 350+ year-old “John Deming House” in Old Wethersfield. This well-preserved saltbox-style home was constructed in 1666 and overlooks the historic Wethersfield Cove. This unique opportunity will serve as a fundraiser to support these two non-profit organizations and is offered one day only, Saturday, October 5, 2024, from 10am-2pm. 
The John Deming House in Wethersfield, Connecticut is a timber frame, plank-style dwelling, believed to be one of the oldest surviving examples in Connecticut, if not the United States.
Built by Sergeant John Deming, this home features wide planks that stretch from the ground floor to the attic and which form the interior walls. Deming’s father is referred to as one of the “fathers of Connecticut” and was named in the original Connecticut Charter created by King Charles in 1662.
The home, owned by only five families in the past 350 years, retains many original features, and was moved to its present location on the Wethersfield Cove in 1951. The I-beams from the move are visible from the basement, as is the original chimney stack. This rare structure has the original pentice roof over the front door, evidence of former plaster walls that have since been removed, and handmade bricks from Wethersfield incorporated into the fireplace rebuild.
Upon check-in at the John Deming House, you will receive a token that entitles you to discounts at Old Wethersfield Country Store at 221 Main Street and/or a free topping on your ice cream purchase at the Main Street Creamery at 271 Main Street after your tour. While in town, enjoy the “Scarecrows On Main” fall display on Main Street.

 Held on the beautiful grounds of Cove Park, Craft Fair is a day of 
community, fun, and celebration of all things fall in the heart of the 
oldest and largest historic district in Connecticut. (Also the state’s 
most recently designated Cultural District). Browse hand-made items, 
shop for unique gifts, meet the artists, and watch demonstrations from 
over 90 juried artisans and vendors. There will be pottery, woodwork, 
prints, jewelry, textiles, and fabric art, painting, photography, and so

Free parking is available along State Street, and adjacent to the
 DMV. While Google gives the address of Cove Park as 533 Main Street, 
fair goers would be better served using the Solomon Wells House (220 
Hartford Avenue) or the DMV (60 State Street) as a frame of reference.
Wethersfield
 Historical Society’s Tent will be filled with “Attic Treasures” and 
treats. Our volunteer bakers will be offering delicious home-made 
goodies for sale. Throughout the year, our friends and neighbors have 
been donating one-of-a-kind items to our “Attic Treasures” that the 
society offers for sale to help support our educational programming. The
 Old Wethersfield Arts &amp; Crafts Fair also welcomes other area 
non-profits like the Wethersfield Academy for the Arts, the Wethersfield
 Art League, and Ginger’s Jams and Jellies to share their work and 
missions with the community.Back
 by popular demand, 1 free pumpkin will be given to the first 100 
children under age 12. Children can bring their pumpkins to the tent 
along State Street to decorate them. Children (and their parents) will 
enjoy great food by many vendors. This year’s fair has the added feature
 of food trucks. There will also be live music. 
The
 Old Wethersfield Arts &amp; Crafts Fair is a benefit that supports 
Wethersfield Historical Society, a 501(c)3 non-profit, membership 
supported organization founded in 1932. The Society offers free 
admission to the Wethersfield Museum year round in addition to providing
 quality educational programming that improves the lives of residents 
and helps preserve the oldest and largest historic district in the state
 of Connecticut. Tickets are on sale now. Purchased in advance, tickets&nbsp;are
 $7,

As the saying goes, the third time is the charm. The Witch of Blackbird Pond Ball returns on Saturday, October 26th from 7:30 pm – 10:30 pm. Wethersfield native and media figure Renee DiNino is back as mistress of ceremonies. Renee has the requisite skills to keep the festivities rolling all night long. A professional DJ has been engaged to provide the evening’s soundtrack, guaranteed to get you up and dancing, with more than a passing nod to some Halloween classics. The Vintage Dance Society is back to provide inspiration on the dance floor and show us all how it’s done. The Ball features local refreshments, music, dancing, cocktails, mocktails, potions, and other spellbinding activities! Attendees are invited to come in costume, but it’s not a requirement. (That being said, many attendees who came in street clothes said “next year, I’m coming in costume”). Those who do are automatically entered in the costume contest. Ascot Catering is already under contract to bring their delectable hors d’oeuvres. Uniquely crafted libations are being created specifically for this event. The desserts will be truly magical. 
Two drinks are included with admission to this 21-and-over event and a cash bar will be available for those who are still thirsty. Proceeds go to support WHS’ educational programming. Tickets for this exclusive 21-and-over event are $75 per person and are on sale now. For the truly adventurous, there are a limited number of Special Patron Hour Tickets which entitle the bearer to early admission at 6:30 pm for $100 per person. These patrons will enjoy uniquely prepared libations and delectable treats that are only available during this magical hour. A 20% discount is available on all tickets to current Wethersfield Historical Society members.
