Endangered Hawk Rescued by Middlebury Animal Control Officer: Report

The bird is recovering from an unknown illness.

MIDDLEBURY, CT — The town's Animal Control Officer, Oreste "Rusty" Bona, last week rescued an endangered goshawk on Kelly Road in Middlebury last week, and now the rare hawk is recovering at a facility that cares for birds, reports the Waterbury Republican-American.

The hawk was brought to Weston-based nonprofit Christine’s Critters, which cares for birds of prey, according to the publication. It has been checked out by a veterinarian who is trying to determine what's wrong with the animal.

The bird was barely moving when Bona caught it to bring it to the Weston rescue.

"Dehydrated and unable to stand, but not starving," Christine's Critters wrote about the bird on its Facebook page. "No obvious breaks of any sort. After a night of fluids it was off to the Vet today with her. She has no spinal or leg fractures or any other noticeable problems and has tested negative for lead poisoning."
