Coach, Teacher Accused Of Sex With A Minor: Hillsborough Sheriff

RIVERVIEW, FL — A teacher and coach at Riverview High School faces charges after sexual interactions with a juvenile, according to a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office news release.

David Patrick Coffey, 34, was charged with unlawful use of a two-way communication device, two counts of sexual battery as an authority over a student, four counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor, and unlawful sexual activity with a minor as an authority figure over a student.

On July 30, the juvenile victim shared that they had “an inappropriate relationship” with Coffey, the sheriff’s office said.

Coffey used social media apps to interact with the victim.

"This man abused his power as not only an authority figure but a mentor to young women," Sheriff Chad Chronister said. "My heart aches for this victim and I encourage her to seek any help she may need as she heals from this violation of trust."

Coffey was hired by Hillsborough County Public Schools in 2015 as a social studies teacher. During his time with the school district, he coached junior varsity football, girl’s flag football, varsity football, girl’s wrestling and girl’s golf.
