5-Year-Old Dead After Kidnapping, Chase Through Jacksonville: Police

The suspect led authorities on a 30-mile chase before driving into a pond while trying to exit Interstate 95, police said.

JACKSONVILLE, FL — A 5-year-old girl is dead following a kidnapping and high-speed chase through Jacksonville on Thursday, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

According to Jacksonville Sheriff's Office spokesman Christian Hancock, authorities received a call about a kidnapping on the city's north side between 7:30 and 8 p.m. Authorities spotted the female suspect's vehicle at a stoplight, Hancock said; however, she fled when they attempted to stop her.

The woman led authorities on a 30-mile chase on Interstate 95, authorities said. The chase ended when the woman drove into a pond while trying to exit the interstate.

Police arrested the woman; however, authorities could not locate the little girl, who was in the car with the woman, Hancock said. A dive team later found her at the bottom of the pond. She was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

The woman and the little girl were known to each other, Hancock said. Police have not yet released their names.

Hancock said the woman is likely to face multiple charges, including traffic homicide.
