SARASOTA COUNTY, FL — Sarasota County Schools updated its calendar adding two new instruction days after Hurricane Ian closed many schools for weeks.

Though they were originally scheduled as professional days, Jan. 9 and March 20 — both Mondays — are not regular school days for all school and staff, the district shared on Facebook.

When Hurricane Ian hammered Southwest Florida at the end of September, many Sarasota County schools were closed for some time, either because of damage from the storm or because they served as shelters.

Southern Sarasota County was hardest hit by the powerful hurricane and many schools in North Port, Venice, Englewood and nearby areas were closed until Oct. 17.

The added school days will account for those closures, the district said.
