More than 30,000 runners were expected to participate in the 123rd edition of the race. The route weaves from Hopkinton to Boston. The course begins on Main Street in the rural New England town and continues through Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley, Newton and Brookline before concluding in Boston, according to the marathon’s website.

Linden was among the runners this year, along with Yuki Kawauchi, the men's defending champion. This year's event falls on the sixth anniversary of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, which killed three people were killed and maimed hundreds more.

A moment of silence is planned at 2:49 p.m., the time of the first explosion.
