SARASOTA COUNTY, FL — Smoking is no longer allowed at Sarasota County-owned public beaches and parks.

Sarasota County commissioners voted 4-1 Tuesday to adopt an ordinance banning the smoking of cigarettes and filtered cigars on beaches and parks starting Oct. 1, the county said.

Commissioner Mike Moran was the only no vote against the measure, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported.

The county will launch a communications and community education campaign in early August ahead of the ordinance’s effective date.

Commissioners asked county staff to the ordinance in April, reports said.
