PINELLAS COUNTY, FL — A Clearwater man was arrested after being caught racing across Gandy Boulevard Bridge at speeds more than 100 MPH on Saturday night, according to a Florida Highway Patrol arrest affidavit.

Curtis Andrew, 46, was charged with failure to stop for law enforcement.

A trooper watching traffic on U.S. 93 near the exit ramp from the State Road 618 extension saw a Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger speeding as they entered the westbound lanes of Gandy Bridge together.

Near the hump in the road, both cars sped up to more than 100 mph, overtaking slower traffic, the affidavit said.

Andrew, driving the Challenger, made an “aggressive lane change” into the right lane from behind slower left lane traffic and continued west into Pinellas County at more than 80 mph, FHP said. The Camaro slowed to less than 80 mph before crossing into Pinellas.

After overtaking Andrew, the trooper tried to pull him over. Though he slowed down, he continued driving west for a quarter mile without stopping, according to the affidavit.

The trooper continued driving alongside Andrew, who only stopped after “making light contact” with the FHP vehicle, the affidavit said.

Andrew faces charges in both Hillsborough and Pinellas counties and a 30-day hold was placed on his car.
