ATLANTA — Although coronavirus cases continue to drop across the country while the number of those who are fully vaccinated continues to rise, many Independence Day celebrations have once again been canceled, modified or will be held virtually due to the pandemic.

Traditional fireworks displays in Midtown, like the annual Lenox Square fireworks extravaganza or the yearly show at Centennial Olympic Park, won't happen this Independence Day. Even the Atlanta Braves game this year is a daytime contest, which typically limits the possibility of colorful explosives lighting up the sky. But there are still ways you can celebrate.

Here is what’s on tap for the July 4th in Midtown:

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race returns in person this year after a 2020 hiatus for the COVID-19 pandemic. The 52nd running of the historic Atlanta 10K race will follow the traditional 6.2-mile route from Lenox Square in Buckhead south along Peachtree Road to Midtown where it turns east onto 10th Street to end at Piedmont Park. To accommodate social distancing, the event is being held over two days — both Saturday, July 3 and Sunday, July 4 — and the staggered start times are being spaced out more while start groups are smaller. This information is subject to change, so check for possible updated race scheduling and details before the day of your race. Virtual participation will also be available this year.

While an area will be provided for racers to meet family and friends following the race, Road Race officials have suspended the usual post-race gatherings.
