ATLANTA, GA — Police have arrested a man accused of robbing a woman at knifepoint in the parking lot of a Buckhead Home Depot.

Steven White, 65, was charged with armed robbery and kidnapping, and was taken to the DeKalb County Jail on an outstanding warrant, Atlanta Police said.

Police said White snuck into the passenger side door of the victim’s SUV as she was loading purchases in the back of the vehicle around noon on Feb. 24.

“The woman was able to maintain her situational awareness and she was actually able to de-escalate the situation a bit,” Atlanta Police Lt. Ryan Stephens told reporters. “I think she’s incredibly brave and she protected herself the best way she could in that situation.”

White snatched the woman’s necklace, took cash from her wallet and ran away, leaving the woman with some minor cuts, police said.

Stephens said investigators with the police armed robbery combed through “hours and hours of surveillance footage” from MARTA and were eventually able to track White to a place where he was staying with a friend in the city.

It is unclear what the outstanding charges were that led to the DeKalb County warrant.
