68-Year-Old Man Cutting Front Yard Hit, Killed By Drunk Driver: Reports

A 22-year-old drunk driver, who was texting, hit and killed the man who was cutting his front yard, according to reports.

FORSYTH COUNTY, GA — A 68-year-old man cutting his grass Wednesday is dead after investigators say he was hit by a drunk driver who was texting.

Paul Nix was riding his lawn mower in his front yard off Hopewell Road near Church Road, reported WSB-TV. A 22-year-old driver crashed into him around 4 p.m., the news station reported.

Deputies arrested 22-year-old Kenneth Johnson, who they said was sending a text around the time of the accident.

“The text screen was active, and it appeared that Mr. Johnson was replying to a text at the time of the crash,” Sheriff’s office spokesperson Stacie Miller told the Georgia Sun.

“Field sobriety evaluations were also conducted on Mr. Johnson. At the conclusion of the evaluation, it was determined that Mr. Johnson was driving under the influence.”

Johnson was arrested and charged with homicide by vehicle 1st degree, driving under the influence, reckless driving, too fast for conditions, failure to maintain lane and writing, sending reading texts while driving. He was transported to the Forsyth County Jail and is being held on no bond, reported the Georgia Sun.
