Here are the top three stories in Dacula today:

  1. Gwinnett County is installing 97 new license plate readers in an effort to curb crime. Nearly 800 flock cameras can be found across Gwinnett County. Now, the county has set aside just under $280,000 in federal COVID-19 relief funds to add nearly 100 cameras in “high crime” areas. Gwinnett County Police Chief J.D. McClure told the board last week that most of the cameras are in the central area of Gwinnett County and additional cameras would be placed in other parts of the county. (WSBTV)
  2. Board members voted 4-1 to renew Superintendent Dr. Calvin J Watts' contract for an additional two years. Watts, whose contract was set to expire in July, has been the superintendent of the Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) since 2021. He grew up outside of Seattle and relocated to the Southeast early in his career. Watts spent 13 years at GCPS, most recently serving as assistant superintendent of school improvement and operations. He spent six years at the Kent School District in Washington state prior to being appointed Gwinnett County's superintendent. (Fox 5 Atlanta)
  3. Three Gwinnett County athletic directors were recognized as region athletic directors of the year at the 2023 Georgia Athletic Directors Association conference. Central Gwinnett’s Jason Carrera in Region 8-AAAAAAA, Peachtree Ridge’s Ryan Lesniak in 7-AAAAAAA, and Parkview’s Nick Gast in 4-AAAAAAA were all formally recognized. (Gwinnett Prep Sports)
