Chance of Snow in Gwinnett as Winter Weather Hits

From now until the weekend, you're better off preparing for cold weather and lots of rain.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA -- The winter weather is finally here and, in Gwinnett County, that means a chance of snow by the weekend.

But, until then, residents should prepare for chilly temperatures and lots and lots of rain.

The National Weather Service made Gwinnett part of a special weather statement on Wednesday, warning of a “cold rain event” happening over the next few days. But, the statement warns, temperatures expected to hover just above freezing could turn out to be a little cooler.

“It will not take much of a drop at all for the limited impacts to become more significant ...,” the statement reads. “There is still much uncertainty in the forecast based on the borderline temperatures so residents are urged to monitor for updates issued from this office or through local media outlets.”

Wednesday afternoon, temperatures in and around Lawrenceville had climbed to 39 degrees, with an 80% chance of rain. The low Wednesday night was forecast to drop to 33 -- teetering on that freezing/not freezing borderline the NWS noted.

Thursday’s forecast calls for a high of 43, with a 60% chance of more rain. That chance will skyrocket to 90% for Thursday night, when the low should be about 39 degrees.

Friday is when our best chance for snow arrives.

Daytime will be rainy (another 90% chance of showers) but Friday night’s low is predicted to be 31 degrees, bringing a chance of snow mixed in with the rain.

The high will be 40 degrees on Saturday, when forecasters say there is again a chance for snow.

That wintry mix -- of rain, sleet and snow -- could also mean hazardous roadways if temperatures dip. The National Weather Service advises area residents to stay aware of conditions as they consider traveling for the rest of the week.
