Dacula's Ragan Smith Makes U.S. Gymnastics Team As Alternate

Smith will be one of three alternates traveling to Rio with the women's gymnastics squad.

DACULA, GA -- A Dacula gymnast will be making the Olympic trip to Rio as an alternate on the women's team.

Ragan Smith, 15, qualified Sunday night to travel to Rio as a replacement athlete, along with Ashton Locklear and MyKayla Skinner.

Women's gymnasts who made the team outright are Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas, Laurie Hernandez, Madison Kocian and Aly Raisman.

Smith was born in Snellville and grew up in Dacula. She currently trains in Lewisville, Texas, where she attends Texas Virtual Academy.

Nicknamed "Ray Ray," Smith was a 2016 Pacific Rim Championships team and balance beam champion.

On the U.S. Gymnastics website, she lists the floor exercise as her favorite event.

The 2016 Summer Olympics will run from August 5-21 in Rio de Janeiro.
