Georgia Forecast: Severe Weather Expected In Atlanta Wednesday Evening

Winds could gust up to 30 m.p.h. and some storms will be capable of producing tornadoes, the National Weather Service said.

ATLANTA, GA β€” A strong cold front moving into the metro Atlanta area on Wednesday was forecast to bring strong thunderstorms along with it.

The National Weather Service issued a Severe Weather Outlook for much of north and central Georgia shortly after noon.

Thunderstorms were expected to begin developing around 2 p.m. Wednesday across extreme northwest Georgia. Then, a more organized line of storms was predicted to move southeast between 4 p.m. and midnight.

Damaging winds were considered the primary threat of the storm system, although a few storms were forecast to be capable of producing tornadoes and large hail, according to the outlook.

Heavy rains and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning was expected to affect a large area of north and central Georgia.

The storms were expected to move south of the Americus-to-Dublin line after about 1 a.m.

Wednesday afternoon's weather forecast from the National Weather Servicefrom the National Weather Service called for a 60 percent chance of precipitation, with the possibility of thunderstorms. That percentage chance ratchets all the way up to 100 percent for Wednesday night.

As the storms move in, winds could gust up to 30 m.p.h., the weather service said.
