Georgia Weather: Tornado Chances As A Stormy Weekend Looms

In metro Atlanta, the National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook, calling for nearly a week of rain and thunderstorms.

ATLANTA, GA β€” A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for metro Atlanta, with rain Thursday forecast to turn to thunderstorms and tornado-friendly conditions over the weekend.

Issued by the National Weather Service on Thursday morning, the outlook says "strong to severe" thunderstorms could begin as early as Thursday night in the metro area.

On Friday all the way through Wednesday, "multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms" are expected.

In all, three different storm systems will be moving through the area in that time period, the NWS reports.

The most dangerous could be the third, which is expected to hit Atlanta and the surrounding area on Sunday and Sunday night.

"Damaging winds will again be present, but there will also be a possibility of isolated tornadoes," the weather service said in the outlook.

The following is the forecast, from the National Weather Service, for the weekend in metro Atlanta:

Thursday: A slight chance of showers, then a chance of rain and thunderstorms after 4 p.m. Cloudy, with a high near 70. Winds could gust as high as 15 m.p.h. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. Thursday night, rain and thunderstorms are likely, particularly after 9 p.m. Winds could gust as high as 20 m.p.h. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent.

Friday: A chance of rain and thunderstorms. Cloudy, with a high near 71. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent. Another 40 percent chance of showers Friday night, mainly after 1 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 59.

Saturday: Showers likely with a possible thunderstorm. Cloudy, with a high near 70. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. Showers and possibly a thunderstorm Saturday night. Low around 58. Chance of rain is 80 percent.

Sunday: Another forecast of showers with a possible thunderstorm. High near 68. Chance of rain is, again, 80 percent. That chance will be 70 percent on Sunday night, when showers and a possible thunderstorm are expected again. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent.
