Suwanee Dam Road Traffic To See Delays Wednesday Evening

Traffic will be shifted near Sugar Hill as construction crews work on an expansion of State Route 20.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA — Drivers on Suwanee Dam Road near Sugar Hill will encounter delays Wednesday evening as road workers shift traffic to build the final lanes on State Route 20.

The traffic shift is scheduled for 8 p.m.-midnight Wednesday, and will impact about 2.5 miles of roadway.

The final work on Highway 20 is being done between Arbor View Way and the Chattahoochee River bridge.

Motorists will be shifted onto the new outside lanes of pavement while the contractor completes the construction on the inside lanes.

"This traffic shift includes several intersections along the route, so we are working to complete the shift as quickly as possible," said Gwinnett County Transportation Director Alan Chapman.

Access to all side streets will be maintained during the traffic shift and flaggers will be in the area to help guide traffic as needed. This is expected to be one of the last traffic shifts on State Route 20 before all lanes are opened to traffic.

Gwinnett County construction on State Route 20 stretches about four miles from Peachtree Industrial Boulevard to Burnette Trail.

Access to the Chattahoochee River bridge will be maintained at all times as Georgia DOT contractors work on a separate project to widen across the river into Forsyth County.

Gwinnett County worked with the Georgia DOT to complete the engineering on both projects.

Federal, state and local dollars were used to fund these projects. Just across the river, Forsyth County is partnering with the state to widen from James Burgess Road to Samples Road.

Construction on Gwinnett’s section of the project is expected to be complete by early next year, according to Chapman. The Georgia DOT section is to be complete by mid-2017.
