Which Theaters in Gwinnett Are Screening 'Purple Rain'

LAWRENCEVILLE -- The sudden death of Prince on Thursday has inspired tributes worldwide.

Now, fans who would like to remember the artist by viewing his 1984 movie "Purple Rain" on the big screen with other fans are in luck.

Select AMC and Carmike theaters are screening the film, which won an Academy Award for its music.

The latter is releasing the movie in about 80 theaters across 24 states while the former will screen it at 87 of its theaters.

Locally, theaters that are showing "Purple Rain" include:

• AMC Sugarloaf Hills
• Carmike 12 Snellville

Theaters with both chains will be showing the film through Thursday.

Directed by Albert Magnoli, "Purple Rain" is a very loosely autobiographical story in which Prince plays "The Kid," a young musician struggling to make a name for himself while battling family and relationship issues.

It won the Academy Award for Best Original Score, but was also dinged with a pair of Razzie nominations: Worst New Star for Appolonia Kotero and Worst Original Song for "Sex Shooter."

Criticisms aside the movies musical performances, including a blistering rendition of its title track, have made it a cult classic and favorite of Prince fans through the years.
