ILLINOIS — A significant weather warmup is coming, but not before residents living in the greater Chicago area will have to deal with bitter wind-chill readings over the weekend as winter conditions remain in the region.

The National Weather Service said that another period of bitterly cold temperatures and sub-zero wind chills will hit the region on Friday night. Forecasters said that residents can expect wind chills between -15 and -25 with the coldest readings being found in the area west of the Fox River.

Saturday night will bring another blast of sub-zero readings with lows below zero before conditions begin to improve beginning on Sunday, the National Weather Service said.

After the greater Chicago area received another round of snow overnight Thursday into Friday, the heaviest snowfall remains in Northwest Indiana, where residents there are expected to see heavy lake effect snow totals that could dump more than a foot of snow in some areas.

Daytime temperatures on Saturday will remain cold, with readings expected anywhere between 8 and 17 degrees, according to forecasters, before wind chills dip below zero on Saturday night.

Sunday will bring the warmest temperatures of the weekend before a 30-50 percent chance of a wintry mix arrives on Monday and continues into Monday evening.

Relief is on the way, however, as temperatures are expected to move above freezing by Monday and approach 40 degrees by mid-week.
