ILLINOIS — After an overnight dose of a wintery mix left sidewalks and local roadways ice-covered and slippery, residents are being warned to give themselves extra time to get to their destination as precipitation continues to move through the area on Tuesday.

The National Weather Service said that freezing rain and sleet that moved through the area Monday night and into Tuesday morning caused ice to build up on sidewalks and untreated roadways, creating slippery conditions.

Drivers are encouraged to check road conditions before venturing out and should reduce their speed and increase the distance between themselves and the car in front of them. The entire greater Chicago area remains under a winter weather advisory as light rain continues with temperatures hovering right around the freezing mark.

Temperatures are only expected to reach about 35 degrees and there is a 100 percent chance of rain or freezing rain along with patchy fog. The dense fog is expected to remain in the area into the overnight hours with temperatures expected to remain around freezing or just above with a 40 percent chance of rain expected, forecasters said.

The damp and cloudy weather pattern is expected to stick around until later this week with rainy conditions expected throughout the morning hours on Wednesday. Temperatures will gradually build into the low-to-mid 40s on Wednesday and will reach 45 by Thursday with chances of rain expected to linger for the remainder of the work week.
