1st Snow, Mid-Winter Cold Headed For Chicago

Wind chill values could fall below zero Thursday night into Friday morning.

It's not even Thanksgiving, but mid-winter weather is moving into Chicagoland. The National Weather service is warning that much of northern Illinois could see its first significant snow fall Thursday night into Friday, along with an early blast of cold air.

The NWS has issued a hazardous outlook for most of the area for Thursday night. Areas impacted include: DuPage, Cook, Kendall, Grundy, Lake, Lee, DeKalb, Kane, Will, Kankakee and La Salle counties. The outlook states there is a limited excessive cold risk Thursday night and a limited snow risk. Friday also has a limited excessive cold risk in the morning, as well as a limited snow risk.

Friday a.m. lows could be down to -5 degrees with wind chill. Thursday night will see temperatures fall to the mid teens or mid 20s, according to the NWS.

The NWS said in the outlook, "An early season shot of mid winter cold combined with some wind could result in minimum wind chill values falling into the single digits below zero in interior portions of northern Illinois late tonight into early Friday."

Lake effect snow showers are also likely in parts of the area downwind of Lake Michigan. A minor accumulation of up to one inch is possible in some locations.
