Big Temp Drop, Storms For IL After Record-Setting Warmth

The weather over the next few days will be fairly active, with a possibility of snow, fog, storms and rain.

The weather over the next few days will be fairly active, with a possibility of snow, storms and rain. According to the National Weather Service, there will be a "pneumonia front" near Lake Michigan on Wednesday afternoon. Temperatures near the lake will crash from 50 degrees into the 30s in the early afternoon.

Fog will also develop Wednesday evening, and storms are possible south of I-80. A chance of snow is possible on Thursday, especially after 4 p.m., according to the NWS. Gusts will be as high as 35 mph, and accumulation of less than one inch is possible.

The warmer temperatures of the past few days won't stick around and temps will remain in the 30s and the 40s through the weekend. According to the National Weather Service, Feb. 27 was the first day with 60 degrees and mainly sunny since late November. WGN meteorologist Tom Skilling shared that this Feb. 27 was the warmest one in 42 years.

Here's a look at the forecast over the next couple of days:

  • WEDNESDAY: A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly after 5 p.m. Patchy dense fog after 5 p.m. Otherwise, cloudy, with a temperature falling to around 46 by 5 p.m. Light and variable wind becoming east northeast 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon.
  • WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Periods of rain, mainly after 9 p.m. Patchy fog. Low around 37. Northeast wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
  • THURSDAY: Rain and snow, becoming all snow after 4 p.m. Some thunder is also possible. Temperature falling to around 34 by 3 p.m. Breezy, with a north northwest wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.
  • THURSDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low around 26. North northwest wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
