One Seriously Injured In Ambulance, Car Crash: State Police

The ambulance rolled on its side, and a Passat was pushed across all lanes and its driver partially ejected, police said.

HOMER TOWNSHIP, IL — A rollover crash involving an ambulance and another vehicle shut down the southbound lanes of Interstate 355 from 159th Street to Route 6 Tuesday morning. Illinois State Police said the crash happened at 6:03 a.m. Tuesday at I-355 southbound milepost 4.5.

The crash involved a Superior ambulance and a black Volkswagen Passat, police said. The Passat was stopped on the righthand shoulder when the ambulance crossed over onto the right shoulder and struck the rear of the car.

The ambulance rolled on its side, and the Passat was pushed across all lanes and the driver was partially ejected, police said. The driver of the Passat was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver and the passenger of the ambulance suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said. The ambulance did not have patients being transported inside at the time of the crash.

Illinois State Police continue to investigate the crash.
