More Mosquitoes Test Positive For West Nile Virus In Northbrook

One of five batches tested came back positive for the virus, according to the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District.

NORTHBROOK, IL — A second batches of mosquitoes tested positive for the West Nile Virus in Northbrook. Out of five batches tested between July 16-22, one came back positive in a report released Wednesday by the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District.

In all, two of 53 batches collected this season in Northbrook have tested positive for the virus.

Though the current risk of infection is low, NSMAD said in its report it is increasing. The agency encourages residents to stay safe, with the best suggested protection being an EPA registered mosquito repellent.

In addition to Northbrook, mosquitoes in Evanston, Glencoe, Kenilworth, Glenview, Northfield, Skokie, Wilmette and Winnetka also tested positive for the West Nile Virus in the latest collection. In total, for the neighboring municipalities, 27 of 152 batches collected tested positive (47 of 900 for the season).

NSMAD also encourages residents to wear proper attire and eliminate or drain items that can hold stagnant water around their properties.
