ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — Mosquitoes at eight local testing locations have tested positive for the West Nile Virus, according to the Village of Arlington Heights. Officials said the risk level for the area is currently high.

The Village of Arlington Heights is a member of the Northwest Mosquito Abatement District. The Wheeling-based agency, created in 1956, works to exterminate mosquitoes, flies, and other insects and to abate as nuisances all stagnant pools of water and other breeding places. The NMAD tests mosquitoes in the townships of Barrington, Palatine, Wheeling, Hanover, Schaumburg, Elk Grove Village and Maine.

Officials are encouraging residents to dump standing water on their properties, and to dress with long sleeves and pants at dawn and dusk. When the virus is detected at heightened levels, adult spraying may be required to help minimize the risk of WNV infecting humans.
