Mosquitoes Test Positive For West Nile Virus In Northbrook: Agency

Positive tests were also found for the first time this year in Glencoe and Niles, according to the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District.

NORTHBROOK, IL — For the first time this summer, West Nile Virus positive mosquitoes have been found in Northbrook. According to the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District, mosquitoes in Niles and Glencoe also tested positive during the latest round of testing by the Northfield-based agency.

The batches of mosquitoes, collected on July 26, tested positive in NSMAD's lab two days later.

So far this year, WNV positive mosquitoes have been found in traps in Evanston, Glenview, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Northfield, Skokie and Wilmette.

NSMAD said while the risk of humans being infected with WNV remains low at this time, it is increasing. NSMAD recommends that residents take the following personal protection measures to minimize mosquito bites:

  • Use EPA registered insect repellent
  • Wear loose fitting clothing
  • Avoid peak mosquito feeding times during the hours around dawn and dusk.
  • Examine their property and eliminate any items that can hold water, particularly smaller items that may be easily overlooked.

Residents should contact the NSMAD for assistance with any mosquito related issues they may be experiencing. NSMAD said, "if it can hold water, it can breed mosquitoes."
