NORTHBROOK, IL — It looks like Illinois State Representative Jonathan Carroll (D-Northbrook) may have an opponent in next year's Democratic primary. Tracy Katz Muhl, a Northfield Township Democratic committee member and former president of the District 28 board of education, announced her candidacy Tuesday.

The Northbrook attorney is hoping to unseat Carroll in the March 19, 2024, primary, with the general election set for Nov. 5 next year.

"Our district and state face real challenges. We've been dancing around key issues for decades," Katz Muhl said in a news release from her campaign. "We've made progress, but we haven’t been able to make the necessary hard decisions needed to consistently balance budgets, fully fund education, and provide equitable access and opportunity to everyone in Illinois."

According to the announcement release, Katz Muhl lives in Northbrook with her husband, Charlie, and two children, Nate and Sarah, and is a University of Chicago-trained attorney. She was president of the District 28 school board for six years.

"I am pleased to endorse Tracy because I know she will be an effective and innovative leader in the Illinois State House and a great partner in cooperative government," U.S. Congressman Brad Schneider, representing Illinois’ 10th Congressional District, said. "Tracy is a force because she has an amazing ability to identify an issue and tackle it with everything she's got."
