NSYMCA’s Pet Blanket Making Event Draws Community Pet Lovers
For Many of the 150 Volunteers It Was a Family Affair
Local pet lovers donated essential animal supplies and made pet blankets for sheltered animals at the North Suburban YMCA’s second annual Pet Blanket Making event held on February 19. The event drew approximately 150 volunteers ages 3 to 77, and hand made over 60 blankets and 80 braided dog toys.
This special volunteer project also caught the eye of Chicago’s media, with CBS-Chicago, NBC-5, and ABC-7 all covering the event.

the blankets which will be donated in March to Wright-Way Rescue, Orphans of the Storm Animal Shelter and Heartland Animal Shelter.
For many of the participants, the pet blanket event was a family affair. “We decided to come out today because my grandma has a shelter dog and we love her so much and wanted to help other shelter dogs,” said Hailey James age 6 from Northbrook.

For other volunteers, the making of these pet blankets was a valuable method for children to learn the benefits of contributing to the community. “Volunteering makes me super happy and I plan to volunteer even when I get older,” noted 9 year-old Lia Soristo.
