NORTHBROOK, IL — Following news earlier this week that mosquitoes in Northbrook were among 24 batches to test positive for the West Nile Virus, the risk of infection is increasing, according to the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District.

Two batches of mosquitoes, collected on July 26 in Northbrook, tested positive in NSMAD's Northfield lab two days later. It marked the first mosquitoes to test positive for WNV this season. Glenview also had one batch of eight test positive, the second time the village has had WNV-positive mosquitoes.

In all, 24 batches of 89 collected tested positive last week, also including mosquitoes in Glencoe, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Niles, Northfield Skokie, Wilmette and Winnetka. For comparison, prior to last week, only 16 of 548 batches tested had tested positive, according to NSMAD.

NSMAD said while the risk of humans being infected with WNV remains low at this time, it is increasing. NSMAD recommends that residents take the following personal protection measures to minimize mosquito bites:

Residents should contact the NSMAD for assistance with any mosquito related issues they may be experiencing. NSMAD said, "if it can hold water, it can breed mosquitoes."
